Winter Reading Activities!
Winter is coming, and with colder temperatures keeping us indoors, it’s the perfect time to encourage students to cozy up with a good book! Reading is one of the most important habits your child can develop. It builds vocabulary, strengthens comprehension, sparks imagination, and even helps improve focus and academic success across all subjects.
To help keep kids excited about reading during the chilly months, here are some fun ideas you can try at home:
-
Create a Reading Nook: Set up a cozy corner with blankets, pillows, and a small lamp. A special space just for reading makes it feel like an adventure!
-
Set a Reading Challenge: Encourage your child to read a certain number of books or minutes each week. Reward milestones with a small treat or extra storytime.
-
Read Together: Take turns reading aloud or listen to audiobooks together. Sharing stories can make reading more interactive and fun.
-
Explore New Genres: Winter is a great time to try books your child hasn’t read before. Mysteries, science fiction, graphic novels, and biographies can spark new interests.
-
Book-Themed Activities: Pair reading with fun activities, like drawing a favorite scene, acting out a chapter, or even making a simple craft related to the story.
-
Visit the Library: Check out the Kearney Public Library! Exploring new books in person can be very motivating.
Even just 10–20 minutes of reading a day can make a big difference. By creating excitement around reading, we can help students grow their skills and develop a lifelong love of books.
Let’s make this winter a season full of stories, imagination, and learning!
